Zollvereingraben pumping station
The Zollvereingraben pumping station is a hydraulic structure of the Emschergenossenschaft in Gelsenkirchen that was commissioned in 1968 .
The pumping station on the southern edge of the Nienhausen Revierpark was needed due to subsidence caused by mining . The amount of coal mined and the dead rock from the Zollverein mine field was around 300 million tons, with the area under Essen-Katernberg and Gelsenkirchen sunk by a maximum of 30 meters. From this almost 500 hectare polder , the groundwater could no longer drain away on its own.
The five pumps can lift a maximum of 4,500 liters per second through a pressure line into the Schwarzbach , 500 meters away . From there the water flows into the Emscher and further into the Rhine .
The Zollvereingraben pumping station was part of the Route of Industrial Culture until the beginning of 2011 .
