The Schwarzbach is an orographically left , 13.1 km long tributary of the Emscher in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany .

It rises in Essen-Schonnebeck in the Hallopark between the Sportpark Am Hallo and the Friedhof am Hallo , all named after the wooded hill that feeds the small spring pond.

The Schwarzbach initially flows briefly in a southerly direction along today's Friedrich Ernestine industrial estate , before turning east along the railway line. At the Essen-Kray Nord train station , it turns north, flows past the former Bonifacius colliery and the Mechtenberg , circling Gelsenkirchen-Rotthausen to the east and touching Gelsenkirchen-Neustadt , before turning west. It flows on through the Gelsenkirchener Stadtgarten and the adjoining Revierpark Nienhausen in a north-westerly direction through the Feldmark to Gelsenkirchen-Heßler , crosses under the A42 and flows into the Emscher at the city limits of Essen- Karnap . Shortly beforehand, it is routed under the Rhine-Herne Canal by means of a culvert .

In the area between Gut Nienhausen (a former Oberhof of Essen Monastery ), the Zollverein slag heap on the western side and the Gelsenkirchen penal institution on the eastern side, the Schwarzbach was the historical border between Essen Monastery and the County of Mark .

From the source to the train station in Essen-Kray , the stream is designed to be natural. The next piece under the station area and the settlement next to the Bonifacius colliery runs underground and only comes to the surface again at Schelters Busch. From then on, as usual with the Emscher itself and many of its tributaries, it is channeled . The differences in height caused by subsidence are balanced out by three pumping stations, the first at the Bonifacius colliery, the Zollvereingraben pumping station in the Revierpark and the third directly in front of the mouth. As part of the conversion of the Emscher system to a near-natural water system, the Schwarzbach will also be renatured.
