history

Field test on Mechtenberg as part of RUHR.2010

In 1999 the park, which was redesigned by the Ruhr Area Municipal Association (predecessor of the Ruhr Regional Association ), was handed over to the population. As part of the IBA the Mechtenberg as only natural, ice age-related elevation in the were Emscher region and a slag heap and a former landfill on Nattmannsweg for enhanced by tree planting on boulevards and in reforestation with fruit orchards, a circle of trees and biking and hiking trails.

The Mechtenberg itself was originally 99 meters high, but its height has now been reduced to 84 meters due to subsidence. The Bismarck Tower of the city of Essen, built in 1900, stands on the mountain , as the summit is in the Essen city area. Together with the Rhine Elbe dump, it is referred to as a "field of experimentation: two mountains - one cultural landscape", in which naturalness and artificiality appear as mutually complementary opposites. At the entrance to the recultivated landfill, the artist Thomas Link installed four 2.60 m high basalt columns in 1998 as a "sound field of the stones on the Mechtenberg - on the subject of the cross".

location

The Emscher Park bike path runs through the landscape park . In the east there is a connection along the former Kray-Wanner-Bahn and the Rheinelbe stockpile to the ore railway line , in the west the Bonifacius colliery and the area of the Zollverein World Heritage Site can be reached via today's "Zollvereinweg" .

The area is cut up by the canalised receiving waters of the Leither Bach and the Schwarzbach and by the B 227 . For this reason, new bridges were built for the paths, and Frei Otto created the designs . As part of the project for the conversion of the Emscher system , further renaturation of the streams will be carried out, which are already anchored in the cities' development plans.

On the edge of the landscape park are the Rheinelbe colliery and dump, the Bonifacius colliery, the Flöz Dickebank settlement , the Achternberg house and the Marienhospital in Gelsenkirchen .

natural reserve

The Mechtenberg nature reserves are located in the landscape park :

  • the 13 hectare area in Gelsenkirchen (area number GE-017), consisting of a wet meadow, an open water area and two fallow areas, was secured to protect the area as a resting and breeding area for birds and to optimize the area as a spawning area for amphibians, and
  • the 30 hectare part in the Essen area (E-005), created to preserve the historically significant hilltop ( Zeugenberg ).

The goldenrods, which often grow wild there, are accepted by the skylark as a substitute for corn fields.
