The nature reserve Mechtenberg in food is in the district Kray on the border with Gelsenkirchen located nature reserve . Together with the adjacent Mechtenberg nature reserve in Gelsenkirchen's urban area, it is located in the Mechtenberg landscape park . The two nature reserves are geographically adjacent and have the same name, but they were delimited due to different protection goals. They are listed at the State Office for Nature, Environment and Consumer Protection in North Rhine-Westphalia under the codes E-005 (Essen) and GE-017 (Gelsenkirchen).

The eponymous Mechtenberg is a witness mountain with a wooded knoll that is visible from afar in the southwestern part of the protected area. It was originally 99 m high, but has sunk to 84 m in the last 100 years due to subsidence . The Bismarck Tower of the city of Essen , built in 1900, stands on its summit . The area is accessed by a few driving and hiking trails.

Biotopes and species worthy of protection

There is a robinia grove on the top of the mountain ; a historic avenue of lime trees leads to the Bismarck tower. On the south-western slope of the hilltop, a poor lawn with real St. John's wort , various grasses and hanging birch trees has formed on the sandy ground . A meadow orchard was created in the northwest . Large parts of the area are used for agriculture, they consist of fat meadow , arable land and field trees . In the east there is a temporarily dry still water surrounded by trees .

Rare for this region is worth as determining habitat type skimmed location with its special importance for the ecological network considered the lean locations in the Ruhr. The rich small structure of the area represents an important retreat for many animal and plant species.

Protection goals

In addition to protecting the biotope complex, the preservation of the Zeugenberg as an object of geological significance is also mentioned as a goal. The dangers of garbage deposits, damage caused by footsteps and a fireplace on the poor meadow should be countered by countermeasures (prohibitions, barriers). Limiting the fertilization of arable land is intended to limit the damage caused by fertilizer drift.
