The Heisinger Bogen bird sanctuary is a nature reserve on the north bank of Lake Baldeney in the Heisingen district of Essen .
description
The bird sanctuary was set up in the 1930s when the Baldeneysee was created. It includes part of the water surface and the bank area at the southern tip of the Heisinger Peninsula (the so-called Heisinger Arc ). The shallow water there shows a well-developed floating leaf zone and residues of Erlenbruchwald on adjacent there is a flooded at regular intervals Auwald rest . A hiking trail (the Bergische Weg ) leads along the bank , separated from the lake by a strip of wood with alder , sycamore and hornbeam . The southern border line of the protected area lies in the lake and is marked there by yellow buoys and poles.

Biotopes and species worthy of protection
In particular, the shallow water area with the quarry forest and the floating leaf zone is seen as determining the value. The area is a refuge for many species of birds, some of which have become rare, and is of great importance as a resting place for migratory birds . A gray heron colony of around 90 breeding pairs has established itself here, and occasional cormorants also breed in the reserve. Otherwise, in addition grebes , mallards , moorhens and coots and rare bird species such as kingfisher , water rail and little grebe found. The neozoa Canada goose and Egyptian goose, which are widespread in the Ruhr Valley , have also made their home here.
Protection goals
The primary protection goals are the "preservation and [the] development of shallow water areas and alder forest as a habitat for many bird species". The given hazards in connection with the use of the area for leisure activities (kick damage, rubbish deposit, dogs running freely) should be counteracted by appropriate restrictions.
