Biotopes and species worthy of protection

With its tall herbaceous vegetation and fallow areas in the bank area, the protected area is an important stepping stone biotope on the lower reaches of the Ruhr. It is a habitat and refuge for water birds and is of "outstanding importance for the biotope network of the agglomeration".

Protection goals

The protection goals are "Protection and preservation of a bank and floodplain biotope as a habitat for water birds and other animal and plant species in the floodplains". The identified hazards (e.g. fertilizer drift, spread of neophytes, rubbish deposits, damage caused by being stepped on) should be counteracted by suitable measures.
