The Asbachtal nature reserve is a nature reserve in Essen 's Kupferdreh district on the border with Velbert .

description

The protected area includes the valleys of the eponymous Asbach and a narrow tributary whose source and mouth are also located in the protected area. The Asbach also represents the western border of the protected area and the border to the neighboring town of Velbert. To the west, on the Velbert area, is a beech forest, to the east the protected area changes into intensively used pastureland .

A few single-lane roads lead through the nature reserve, which connect farmsteads located in the reserve as service roads . The Ⓚ Kupferdreher Rundweg hiking trail also runs through the area on these roads.

Biotopes and species worthy of protection

The stream of the main stream, which is classified as "near-natural", is accompanied in the upper part by wetlands that are extensively cultivated as pastureland; the partially drier meadows in the lower part are used as horse pastures. The side stream is also surrounded by intensively used grassland . There are various hedges and wood structures distributed over the entire area, as well as a slope area made up of beech forest. With its largely intact brook ecosystem, the protected area is a habitat for numerous endangered and protected animal and plant species; among the birds observed here are several Red List species .

“The entire biotope complex with its varied small structure”, a “mosaic of pastures, wet areas, woody plants and forests” is therefore considered to be the determining factor . The importance of the protected area for the biotope network of grassland-used stream valleys in the south of Essen is emphasized.

Protection goals

The conservation goal is the "preservation of a grassland-used stream valley with wet areas as a habitat for many animal and plant species". Intensive grazing and grassland management and the associated eutrophication , as well as the damage caused by visitors, are considered to be a hazard .
