The Kamptal nature reserve is one of three nature reserves in the Schönebeck district of Essen .

description

The protected area comprises the flat valley of a natural stream that drains from west to east. In the north it borders on the terrace cemetery and the small Schönebeck cemetery, in the southeast on the Essen-Duisburg railway line and with its western branch extends to Heißener Straße. In the south there is an extensive arable area .

The protected area is accessed by a walking path, on the southern border a footpath leads along the adjacent arable land.

Biotopes and species worthy of protection

In its upper, western part, the stream is accompanied by various trees (including alder , ash , willow and maple ). In the southwest there is a steep valley slope of a red beech grove, which is designated as an island of old wood . In the further eastern course of the stream, wet and wet areas with large areas of reeds and reed beds have formed, which are surrounded by fallow grassland . Here are Hochstaudenfluren with large stocks of skipjack meadowsweet and Giant horsetail settled.

In 2013, the Western Ruhr Area Biological Station carried out several inspections of the protected area and recorded and mapped the bat , breeding bird and grasshopper species that occur there . The following species (RL = Red List species for North Rhine-Westphalia) were recorded - among many others :

Although the on-site visit was unable to provide direct evidence of this, it is reasonable to assume that the dead wood in the old wood plot serves as a nesting place for bats and some of the forest-typical breeding bird species.

The entire biotope complex of the Bachtal with its "combination of stream, grassland with various levels of moisture and woody stands" is considered to be the determining factor . Its importance for the biotope network of open stream valleys in the north of Essen is also emphasized.

Protection goals

The protection goal is the “preservation of a richly structured stream valley with grassland of various degrees of humidity as well as woody stands and a natural stream”. Manure drift from the adjacent arable land and in particular damage from visitors (see below) are considered to be threats.

Controversy over fencing

The beech grove on the steep southern slope of the valley, designated as an island of old wood, is largely free of undergrowth and is therefore popular with dirt bikers to practice their sport. A trail runs along the southern border of the protected area, between the beech forest and the adjacent arable land. In 2012 and 2013 there was a public controversy about the erection of a protective fence, which was supposed to protect the beech trees from dirt bikers on the one hand, and traffic safety on the other , i.e. to protect bikers and walkers from the dangers that the old wood could pose . In spring 2013 it was decided to erect a game protection fence. By purchasing a strip of the adjoining arable land, the fenced-in area is to be expanded to the south; an extension of the nature reserve to include this additional area is optionally possible. A new beaten path is to be created along the fence.
