The nature reserve Winkhauser Tal (this is the name in Essen, in Mülheim an der Ruhr it is called "Naturschutzgebiet Winkhauser Bachtal") is a nature reserve on the border between Essen and Mülheim an der Ruhr , in the neighboring districts of Schönebeck (Essen) and Winkhausen ( Mülheim). From an administrative point of view , the ecologically coherent area is divided into two sub-areas - one on the Essen side (identifier E-007 ) and one in Mülheim ( MH-006 ).

description

The area is traversed in a west-east direction by the Rosendeller Bach , which forms the city boundary between Essen (north of the brook) and Mülheim (south of it) and at the same time the border between the sub-areas E-007 and MH-006. The stream itself belongs to the Essen area. On the Mülheim side, the Winkhauser Bach, which gives it its name, rises in the middle of horse pastures . The headwaters of both streams are also located in the protected area. These are surrounded by meadows and pastures , in front of them are wet, open areas. Both streams are lined with Salix - woody plants such as sal , silver , broken and almond willows , as they are typical for stream meadows . In the adjoining grassland there are extensive large sedge groves as well as spent sections with tall herbaceous vegetation . In the Mülheim area there are numerous old polluted willows in the swampy floodplain. Because of the comparatively large number of different biotope types , the Winkhauser Bachtal is said to be particularly rich in structures.

The protected area is crossed by the R 23 cycle path in a north-south direction; there are no other walking or hiking trails.

Biotopes and species worthy of protection

The value-determining factors for both sub-areas are “the wet areas along the stream with rare and endangered types of vegetation and plant species, as well as woody areas typical of Bachau”, on the Mülheim side there are the Großseggenrieder, larger stocks of marsh horsetail , pond horsetail and marsh marigold, as well as in the Ruhr area very rare dark green willowherb .

Among the 46 breeding bird species detected in 2007 , several are listed on the Red List of North Rhine- Westphalia or the Red List of the Rhine-Ruhr conurbation : skylark , yellow mocker , goldenhammer , lapwing , small woodpecker , little owl (BSWR 2007), as well as tree sparrow , buzzard and sparrowhawk (LANUV).

Protection goals

The protection goal is "the preservation and optimization of a diversely structured, predominantly moist and open stream floodplain, the head tree populations as well as the field trees on the edge of the floodplain as a habitat for flora and fauna adapted to these location conditions with outstanding importance for the biotope network in the conurbation." In the past decades nature in the Winkhauser Tal was repeatedly threatened by the planning of industrial areas, landfills and motorways.
