Argentine scientists named them after the Argentine naval officer Felipe Fliess (1878–1952), who in 1903 led the rescue trip with the corvette Uruguay for the troubled participants of the Swedish Antarctic Expedition (1901–1903) under the direction of Otto Nordenskjölds .
