Punta Hoff (also called Bello Sur ) is a 5035 m high mountain in the Cordilleras .
location
It is located about 100 km east of Santiago de Chile in Chile and belongs to the Yeso chain. The mountain, unnamed until 1960, was named after a German-Chilean mountaineer who froze to death on the Tupungato volcano in 1960 .
Ascent
The Punta Hoff was the last unconquered mountain in the Andes with a height of over 5000 m. In 1959, a Japanese mountaineering group failed to climb the western flank. The first ascent of Punta Hoff was achieved in February 1962 by two groups of East German and Chilean mountaineers as part of the GDR-Tierra del Fuego-Andes Expedition ( DAFEX ) over the eastern flank. The first to climb on February 23 was Chilean Rubén Lamilla and Germans Fritz Uhlig and Percy Stulz. On February 27, 1962, the Chilean José Arévalo and the Germans Klaus Nickel, Manfred Zielinski and Fritz Rudolph also followed on the eastern route, which was however changed and optimized in parts, which is rated as a joint first ascent by both groups.
