The Dessau Puppet Theater is a puppet theater in Dessau-Roßlau and a division of the Anhaltisches Theater .

As a direct reaction to Obraszow's guest performance in the GDR , the city council of Dessau decided in 1954 to found a puppet theater under municipal management and took over the dolls and stage equipment for Rudolf Zilling's hand puppet theater . As a permanent venue, the theater was given the former hall of a Masonic lodge on Ferdinand-v.-Schill-Strasse in the Neustadt of Dessau. The stage was thus one of the oldest municipal puppet theaters to be foundedon the territory of the former GDR. The repertoire consisted mainly of child-friendly productions. In addition to hand puppets, stick puppets based on the Soviet model were also increasingly used. In 1981, the puppet theater was assigned as the fifth branch of the then state theater .

After the departure of the director Jens Hellwig , Frank Bernhardt from the Magdeburg puppet theater also took over the artistic direction of the Dessau stage in the 2005/2006 season . On October 31, 2008 , the Dessau Puppet Theater celebrated the opening of its new venue in the Old Theater at a historical theater location in Kavalierstrasse.
