Puqueldón

Puqueldón is a city on the island of Lemuy in Chile , which together with eight villages forms the municipality ( Comuna ) Puqueldón. The community, which was supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2002 , has three structures that have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

history

The village of Puqueldón with its originally indigenous population was first mentioned in 1776 as "Pucolón" and was elevated to a town ( villa ) at the end of the 18th century . The first chapel in Puqueldón was mentioned in 1785, and a census in 1787 counted a combined population of 1,395 in Puqueldón, which was Chile's military base and garrison town during colonial times, and the neighboring towns of Aldachildo and Ichuac . In 1826 Puqueldón became an administrative center ( Departamento ), and in 1924 the city had public schools, a post office, registry office and a central town square ( plaza ). The church was built in 1940. In the 1960s, Puqueldón was one of the first cities in Chile to have a mayor who belonged to the socialist party, which earned the city the nickname "Little Cuba ( Cuba Chica )".

In the 2002 census, the population of the municipality of Puqueldón was 4,160 (2,006 male and 2,154 female), most of whom lived in the area of ​​the former city of Puqueldón. Between 1992 and 2002 the population fell by 2.1%.

Infrastructure

Puqueldón is located on the north coast of the island of Lemuy and has a small fishing port. As the center of a community called Comuna in Chile , Puqueldón is the seat of various authorities. The place also has a library, various schools and a sports field. The main street, Calle JM Carrera, has shops, restaurants and tourist accommodation. The center of the city is - as in the other cities of Chile - a square, called Plaza de Armas , around which the church built in 1940 (Puqueldón belongs to the diocese of San Carlos de Ancud ), the town hall ( Municipalidad ), the post office and the most important one is located School, called Colegio , group.

Attractions

In the north-east of the city, the Mirador de la Virgen viewpoint offers a beautiful view of Puqueldón and its surroundings. The church of San Onolasco , located in the central plaza of the Armas , with a gable roof and two towers that can be seen from afar, was built in 1940 by the inhabitants of the city from different types of wood, mainly larch and cypress . Such joint work is common practice in house building on the islands of Chiloé and Lemuy and is called " minga ". Every year on June 29th, as part of the parish festival, a procession takes place from here to the other eight churches or chapels on the island. Three of them were named World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in November 2000 :

Transport links

From the port of Chulchuy, 6 km west of Puqueldón, there is an hourly to half-hourly car ferry to Puerto Huichas in the municipality of Chonchi on the larger island of Chiloé. Puqueldón is connected to the other places on Lemuy by asphalt or gravel roads, which can be used in all weathers and on which buses run regularly. Some buses even go directly to the provincial capital Castro on Chiloé. The nearest airport is in Puerto Montt on the Chilean mainland.
