location

Aldachildo, which lies on the north coast of the hilly island of Lemuy, forms the municipality ( Comuna ) Puqueldón with eight other localities with 4160 inhabitants (2002), whose area covers the entire island with its 97 km² area. The distance to Puqueldón, the largest town on the island and seat of the local government, is 10 km.

Worth seeing

Aldachildo is visited a lot because of its beautiful wooden church Iglesia Jesús Nazareno . The church was built in 1910 in the middle of the village near the coast to be a guide for seafarers and fishermen with its tower. The main building material was the robust wood of the Coihue southern beech , which does not rot even in the humid climate of southern Chile, but cypress and larch wood were also used.

Towards the end of the 20th century there were already plans to close the church in Aldachildo and replace it with a modern new building. It was declared a National Cultural Monument on August 10, 1999, before being included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in November 2000 . Renovations - especially in the area of the tower and facade - took place in 2005 and 2007.

As is usual with all wooden churches on the islands of Lemuy and Chiloé, rivets made of wood were not used in the construction of the church in Aldachildo, as metal was very scarce. The three-aisled church has a gable turret with a tent roof that is visible from afar and is divided into three parts. As is typical for the wooden churches of its kind, the wooden church in Aldachildo also has a portico with arches. In this case there are seven arches, of which, in contrast to comparable church buildings, four are round and only three are pointed arches. In the area of the portico, the church in Aldachildo has only one entrance, which leads into the central nave, and not a separate entrance for each of the three naves like most of the other wooden churches on Chiloé and Lemuy. In this it is similar to the church in Dalcahue on Chiloé, but it is considerably larger.

Inside the church, which is lined with larch clapboard, the numerous paintings in the central nave are striking, depicting red and yellow flowers. The vaulted ceiling of the nave is blue and decorated with stars.

Transport connections and infrastructure

The island of Lemuy can be easily reached from Chonchi on the larger island of Chiloé with an hourly ferry, the crossing only takes a few minutes.

From Chulchuy, the ferry port in Lemuys, all places on the island can be easily reached via asphalt or gravel roads. Aldachildo is at the end of a road that can be used in all weathers and is 5 km from San Martín, the center of the island. Buses run to and from Aldachildo several times a day, and a few times a day there is even a direct connection to Castro , the capital of the province of Chiloé. The nearest airport is in Puerto Montt on the Chilean mainland.

Agriculture - especially cattle breeding - and fishing are the main sources of income for the population of the island of Lemuy and thus also of Aldachildo, which is one of the oldest villages in Lemuy. There are several farms around the village. Aldachildo has four shops and a modern school. The cemetery, which was built on a hill in the east of the village, offers a panoramic view of Aldachildo and its surroundings.
