Church Virgen de Lourdes in Detif

location

Detif, which is located on the southeast coast of the hilly island of Lemuy, forms the municipality ( Comuna ) Puqueldón with eight other localities with 4160 inhabitants (2002), whose area covers the entire island with its 97 km² area. The distance to Puqueldón, the largest town on the island and seat of the local government, is 21 km.

Worth seeing

Detif, which already had a chapel in 1734, is known for its wooden church Iglesia Virgen de Lourdes , which is well worth seeing . The church was built on the coast at the beginning of the 19th century in order to be an orientation aid for seafarers and fishermen with its tower, and the robust wood of the Coihue southern beech , which does not rot even in the humid climate of southern Chile , was used for the construction , as well as larch wood . As is usual with all wooden churches on the islands of Lemuy and Chiloé, rivets made of wood were not used in the construction of the church in Detif, as metal was very scarce.

The three-aisled church has a gable turret with a tent roof that is divided into two parts. As is typical for the wooden churches of their kind, the wooden church in Detif also has a portico with arches in the facade area . In this case there are five arches. In the area of the portico, the church in Detif has only one entrance, which leads into the central nave, and not a separate entrance for each of the three naves like most of the other wooden churches on Chiloé and Lemuy. In this, it is similar to the church in Aldachildo on Lemuy and the church in Dalcahue on Chiloé, but which are considerably larger. In the relatively simple interior of the church, in the area of the central nave, there are numerous votive ships that hang down from the vault and that were donated by seafarers on the occasion of their rescue from distress.

The church was declared a National Cultural Monument on August 10, 1999, before being included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in November 2000 . Renovations took place in 1996 and 2001.

The church's patronage feast is celebrated with a procession on March 25th.
