Purakaunui Falls

The Purakaunui Falls are a cascade of several waterfalls of the Purakaunui River in the Catlins on the South Island of New Zealand . The drop height is only 20 m, but they serve as a landmark for Southeast New Zealand.

The falls are 17 km southwest of the town of Owaka and 5 km from where the river flows into the Pacific .

They are isolated in the bush in a 5 km² nature reserve and can be hiked along a well-marked path that can be reached by car on a slope that branches off the main road between Owaka and Invercargill . The Purakaunui Falls are a stop on the Southern Scenic Route .

The falls are featured on a 1976 New Zealand postage stamp.
