Purbach is an extensive impact crater in the southwest of the lunar front , east of Mare Nubium , south of Thebit crater and north of Regiomontanus .

The rim of the crater is heavily eroded, the interior largely flat.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the Austrian mathematician and astronomer Georg von Peuerbach (also Georg Purbach ).

East of Purbach, at a moon age of around 6.7 days, shortly before reaching the first quarter of the moon , the visual effect Lunar X can be observed on the moon terminator .
