The Purbeck Mineral and Mining Museum is a museum on the topics of Purbeck Ball Clay , clay -Mining and narrow gauge railways on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset .

description

The operators of the museum have relocated parts of a disused clay mine to the north station and set up a field railway with locomotive sheds and wagon shed in which locomotives and wagons are stored, renovated and exhibited. To lead the railway line over bridge no. 15 over the standard gauge Swanage museum railway to an area that belongs to the museum. The state of construction of the "Skew Bridge" built in 1885, i. H. a bridge running diagonally across the railroad track was examined by a civil engineer in 2010 and found to be good according to its age.

The museum was built by volunteers under the management of the Swanage Railway Trust and inaugurated in 2014. Among other things, it deals with the history of the following narrow-gauge railways:

Narrow gauge diesel locomotives on the Fayles Tramway

It also collects exhibits on slate and shale gas , Purbeck limestone, clay, lime and other materials, as well as oil.

Reconstructed tracks parallel to the Swanage Railway

In 2014, the Purbeck and Mineral and Mining Museum, together with its parent Swanage Railway Trust, published the plan to open the museum on as many days as possible and to make areas that were previously inaccessible. As a first step, the exhibition was modernized and in 2015 a cable winch for operation with bulk goods wagons was put back into operation. After that, the bridge is to be restored and a building for Secundus and car No. 28 will be built, which are currently still in storage at Corfe Castle station .

Rail vehicles

Unless otherwise noted, the rail vehicles have a 2-foot (610 mm) track.
