PureFTPd is an open-source - FTP server for Unix and Unix-like systems. The operating systems GNU / Linux , many BSD derivatives, Solaris , Tru64 UNIX , Darwin , IRIX and HP-UX are supported . The program also supports LDAP , MySQL , PostgreSQL and user-defined authentication, as well as SSL / TLS encryption and the File Exchange Protocol (FXP).

In contrast to most other FTP daemons, PureFTPd is not configured using a configuration file (except for LDAP and MySQL), but rather using attributes that are passed to the daemon when it starts. There is also a configuration file (under / usr / local / etc /). However, by means of a Perl - or Python - script , which as wrapper converted to function in a console command. There are also two optional graphical front ends : kcmpureftpd, a module for the KDE control center, and PureAdmin, which is based on GTK 2. For Mac OS X there is the PureFTPd manager, which is based on Cocoa . The user manager for PureFTPd exists as a web frontend . It needs a web server, preferably Apache , a PHP installation and a MySQL database in which the (virtual) FTP users are managed.

Virtual users, i.e. users who do not exist on the system but only in the PureFTPd database, are also supported. Virtual users inherit the properties from a "real" user. This saves configuration effort and increases security and flexibility.

From version 1.0.15 the program is under a BSD license , previously under GPL .

PureFTPd is based on Troll-FTPd, which was written by Arnt Gulbrandsen around 1995 while working at Trolltech .
