The Purple beetle ( Anostirus purpureus ) is a beetle from the family of beetles (Elateridae).
features
The slender beetles are 8.5-14 mm long. They have a black body color. The wing covers are colored blood red. The top of the beetle is hairy red or rusty gray. The legs are black or brown-black. The wing covers are about twice as long as they are wide. The 3rd and 7th wing ceiling space is raised rib-like over the entire length. The antennae of the males are combed, while those of the female are sawn. The anal star is cut out wide on the sides.
Similar species
- Anostirus gracilicollis - anal sternite with straight sides; the 3rd and 7th wing ceiling space is not raised over the entire length
- Anostirus castaneus - the elytra are yellow; the elytra are not keeled
distribution
Anostirus purpureus is widespread in southern Central Europe as well as in southern Europe. To the north, the occurrence extends to Denmark and the Baltic States . The species is absent on the British Isles and in Fennoscandinavia . To the east, the distribution area extends over Asia Minor and the Caucasus to Western Asia and the Himalayas .
Way of life
The beetles can be seen from April to July. The typical habitat of the beetles is formed by the edges of forests, especially in foothills and mountain areas as well as pine heaths. The beetles are often found on elderberries ( Sambucus ) and willows ( Salix ). The larvae live in the soil in the wooden sump of the roots.
