The Putuo Shan ( Chinese  普陀山 , Pinyin Pǔtuó Shān ), Putuo , also Putuoshan, is an island off the coast of Zhejiang near Shanghai in China . It belongs to the Zhoushan archipelago . Putuo is an important place for Chinese Buddhism and is associated with Guanyin , who is the most famous bodhisattva in China.

The name Putuo Shan means something like "Mountain Potala ", which in Buddhist tradition is considered the seat of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara , that is, Guanyin, as the Chinese name is.

The island is about 100 km from Shanghai, across the Hangzhou Bay. The next major city with an airport is Zhoushan. The island is 12.5 square kilometers. The highest point on the island is Mount Foding (佛顶山) at 300 meters. It is one of the four most important mountains in China for Buddhism.

history

In 863, the Japanese monk Egaku (慧 锷) erected a statue of Guanyin at Chaoying Cave (潮音洞). This place later became a famous tourist attraction.

Formerly, Japanese troops stationed on the island. Today many smaller gunboats belonging to the Chinese army are anchored around the island.

Attractions

Sights include the 20-meter-tall Guanyin statue, over 20 temples, in particular the Puji Temple (普 济 禅寺), the Fayu Temple (法 雨 禅寺), the Huiji Temple (慧 济 禅寺) and the Zhengfa Temple (正法 讲 寺).
