The pajama cardinalfish ( Sphaeramia nematoptera ) is a small, 8.5 centimeter long marine fish that is found in the western, tropical Pacific from Java to the Ryukyu and Fiji Islands , Tonga and the Great Barrier Reef . It is a popular ornamental fish for the saltwater aquarium and has already been bred.

features

The pajama cardinalfish is high-backed, the two dorsal fins , the ventral fins and the anal fins are long extended. A wide, dark band extends between the first dorsal fin and the pelvic fins, dividing the body in half. The front part of the body is yellow, the rear part light gray with regular brown spots. The big eyes are red. The mouth is large and above all . The second dorsal fin, anal fin and caudal fin are transparent.

Fin formula : dorsal VII – VIII / 9, anal II / 9–10

Way of life

The pajama cardinalfish live in lagoons and protected coral reefs between the branches of hard corals ( Porites nigrescens and P. cylindrica ) at depths of one to twelve meters. It is nocturnal and feeds on zooplankton that are hunted near the ground.

Like all cardinalfish, the fish are mouthbrooders . The aquarium spawned every 13 to 18 days. One clutch counted comprised 320 eggs. The male takes the clutch in its mouth and does not eat anything until the larvae hatch after 8 to 9 days. The hatched larvae are 2 mm long and extremely slim. With a length of one centimeter, the young fish are colored throughout.
