Pyli ( Greek Πύλη ( f. Sg. )) Is a small town and the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name in the Greek region of Thessaly . Until 1928 the place was called Porta Pazar.

location

The small town of Pyli is located about 17 km southwest of Trikala on the southern bank of the Portaikos at its entry into the fertile Thessalian plain. On the opposite side of the river is Agios Vissarion.

history

Together with the monasteries of Dousikou and Gouras, today's local community was founded in 1912 as the rural community of Porta Pazar (Κοινότητα Πόρτα Παζάρ). The name was changed to Pyli in 1928. The rural municipality of Pyli received municipal status in 1946. On the occasion of the municipal reform in 1997 , this was initially merged with six rural municipalities in what was then the municipality of Pyli and received the status of a local community in the newly founded municipality of Pyli with the administrative reform in 2010 .

traffic

For many centuries, Pyli was considered a place of great strategic importance. The Vissarion Bridge from late Byzantine times over the Portaikos was the only connection from the Thessalian plain to the Pindus villages and to Epirus. The construction of the trunk road from Arta to Trikala through the valley of the Portaikos and the Kondili bridge near Pyli enabled motor traffic to enter the area from 1936.
