Pythodoros (strategist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pythodoros ( ancient Greek Πυθόδωρος Pythódōros , Latinized Pythodorus; probably * before 479 BC; † after 414 BC) was a strategist in ancient Athens and a follower of Zenon of Elea .

In Plato's dialogue Parmenides , on the occasion of the great Panathenaic in August 450 , Pythodoros is the host of the aged Parmenides and his pupil Zenon. Previously he was referred to as a friend of Zenon, and he may also be his pupil. As a house owner and host, he must already have a certain social status at this time.

In 426/5 BC During the Peloponnesian War , Pythodoros was a strategist and was sent from Athens to Sicily, where he replaced Laches as commander in chief of the fleet. There he tried to recapture a Locrian fortress that Laches had already taken before him , but was defeated by the Locrians in the battle and withdrew again. After his return to Athens he was punished with exile.
