Qalʿat Ibn Maʿn

The Qalʿat Ibn Maʿn ( Arabic قلعة ابن معن), also Qalʿat Faḫr ad-Dīn al-Maʿnī (قلعة فخر الدين المعني), Qalʿat Tadmur (قلعة تدمر) or Qaṣr Ibn Maʿn (قصر ابن معن), is a well-preserved fortress near the ancient ruined city of Palmyra (today: Tadmur) in the Syrian Governorate of Homs .

history

The fortress was probably built in the Mamluk period (1250–1517). Other research speak of an Ayyubid predecessor of approximately 1230. The Lebanese Druze emir Fakhr ad-Din (r. 1585-1633) extended his principality of Ma'n Dynasty (hence the name), to the east of the castle Shmemis up moved here and converted it into a castle-like residence. He tried to expand his domain at the expense of the Ottomans . However, this endeavor was unsuccessful: he was persecuted by the Turks, captured and executed in Constantinople in 1635.

During the fighting between Syrian government forces, supported by Russian units, and IS, the citadel was captured by Syrian units in early March 2017.

sightseeing

Visiting the fortress was possible every day before the civil war in Syria . It is located about two kilometers north of today's city of Tadmur. A road leads directly up to the castle entrance on the north side of the mountain.
