Qax , also Gakh ( Georgian კახი / Kachi ), is a city in Azerbaijan . It is the capital of the Qax district . The city lies on the banks of the Kurhumchai River. The name means something like fortress .

Around 13,900 people live in the city. Georgians are a large minority . There is a cultural center and an old Georgian Orthodox church in the city.

There are bus connections to Baku as well as Russia and Georgia. There is also a train station outside the city.
