Qobuz , a music streaming company (and website with download options from Xandrie SA ), based in Paris, is a French online music streaming and download company that offers services in ten other European countries, in Belgium, Germany, Great Britain and Ireland in addition to France , Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Spain and USA is available.
History and ownership structure
The company was founded in 2007 by Yves Riesel and Alexandre Leforestier and initially supported by well-known venture capital investors with a total of around € 13 million. At the beginning of November 2015, insolvency proceedings were initiated for the company after no follow-up financing could be found despite the increasing number of subscribers. In late December 2015, Xandrie, a French digital distribution platform, acquired the business from bankruptcy.

Qobuz offers four different music streaming subscriptions (Qobuz Premium, Qobuz HiFi, Qobuz Studio and Qobuz Sublime +), whereby none of the subscriptions can be acquired free of charge, unlike, for example, from the competitor Spotify, but the music program is ad-free. The music catalog comprises around 40 million titles (18 million in 2014 and 13 million in 2013). In 2018, with 70,000 albums, Qobuz claims to offer the world's largest selection of albums in Hi-Res 24-bit quality.

Surname
The name of the website is derived from the traditional musical instrument qobyz from Central Asia and Kazakhstan , a type of lute with two horsehair strings that is played with a bow and is said to have supernatural powers.
