Qualcomm Atheros (formerly just Atheros ) is a subsidiary of Qualcomm and develops chipsets for radio applications such as WLAN , Bluetooth , PLC , VHF radio and GPS , as well as combination chips. Chips for Ethernet and fiber optics are also in the range.
The company was founded in 1998 by Teresa H. Meng, a Stanford University professor , along with Chik Patrick Yue and John LeRoy Hennessy . In 2004 Atheros went public. In May 2011, Qualcomm acquired the company for $ 3.1 billion.
Open source software support
Atheros did not previously publish documentation for its chips, which made it difficult to develop drivers for them. As a result, the driver support under Linux was poor. By reverse engineering the FreeBSD binary drivers , the MadWifi driver was developed, which resulted in ath5k , which was eventually incorporated into the Linux kernel .
In July 2008, Atheros changed its policy and hired two developers to develop the open driver ath9k for Linux. In 2013, the firmware of two WLAN chipsets was also released.
