Quatre-Bras
Quatre-Bras or Quatre-Bras de Baisy-Thy (four arms) is the junction of the highway from Brussels to Charleroi ( N5 ) and from Namur to Nivelles ( N93 ) located next to Baisy-Thy (municipality of Genappe ) in the Belgian province of Walloon Brabant , Nivelles district.
The place is famous from the battle of June 16, 1815 between the Allies under Wellington and the French under Ney . The attacks by the French cavalry failed because of the resistance of the German and British infantry. About 5,000 men fell on both sides, including Duke Friedrich Wilhelm von Braunschweig and Oels , for whom a lion monument was erected here 75 years after his death. It was made copper-driven in the Wilhelmshütte in Bornum on behalf of the state of Braunschweig.
