Qubur al-Walayida ( Arabic قبور الولايدة, DMG Qubūr al-Walāyida , also Walaydah ) is the current Arabic name of an archaeological site between Gaza and Be'er Scheva on the Frankincense Route .

meaning

Prof. Niemann (Theological Faculty of the University of Rostock) informed about the scientific significance of the excavation:

Qubûr al-Walâyidah lies in the transition between the coastal plain in the west and the steppe or desert in the east. We are interested in the exchange and the peculiarities of peasant societies and nomads, as they are shown in the material legacies of a village on the edge of the dry-field region. The project also deals with the analysis of cultural and social transitions between the coastal plain and the groups living to the east in the southern Shephelah hill country, the Judah Mountains and the northern Negev. ... Qubûr al-Walayidah is located on the eastern edge of Nahal Besor (Wadi al-Ghazze). The name refers to a nearby cemetery of the Bedouin tribe of the Bani Walâyidah who used to settle here. In earlier surface inspections by G. Lehmann, SA Rosen and HM Niemann, the settlement was found to be a village settlement, presumably more than medium-sized, of max. 4 ha ... "

Digs

The first excavations took place in 1977 under the direction of Rudolf Cohen. After a survey in the area of Qubur al-Walaydah in 2005, the universities of Be'er Scheva , Rostock and Leipzig carried out an excavation campaign in 2007. The excavation of Qubur al-Walayida is funded by the German Research Foundation as part of the Collaborative Research Center 586 “Difference and Integration”.

So far, two areas have been excavated using a chessboard system. In field 1 there was a monumental structure from the Late Bronze Age and the Iron Age I, which can be interpreted as an Egyptian fortress. In the neighboring field 2, traces of settlement from the Iron Age II were found, which suggest that the size and importance of the settlement have decreased significantly.
