Angelika Berlejung

Angelika Berlejung (* 1961 in Heidelberg ) is a German Protestant theologian in the field of the Old Testament and an ancient orientalist .

Live and act

In 1980 Angelika Berlejung began to study theology, Assyriology and Semitic studies at the University of Heidelberg , moved to the University of Munich and finished her studies in 1988. From 1986 she also stayed in Brussels , Berlin and London for study purposes . A teaching position for the Old Testament, she received at the University of Koblenz-Landau 1992/1993, 1993, she went as a research assistant at the University of Rostock and 1995 at the University of Heidelberg, where she worked for two years.

1997 Berlejung in Heidelberg became a doctor of theology doctorate . Her dissertation is entitled The Theology of Images. Production and dedication of cult images in Mesopotamia and the Old Testament image polemics . The following year she received a teaching position for theology at the University of Friborg (Switzerland) . She was also awarded the Ruprecht Karls Prize in 1998. The very next year she became professor for the languages ​​and cultures in Syria and Palestine at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven .

In 2002 Berlejung participated in the Encyclopedia of the Material Culture in the Biblical World , in 2003 she was a lecturer at the Humboldt University in Berlin and in 2004 she was appointed full professor for Old Testament studies at the theological faculty of the University of Leipzig . It works there to this day. In 2006 she was a visiting professor at the University of Basel , worked as co-director on the excavation in Qubur al-Walayida in 2007 and was a visiting professor in Stellenbosch and Pretoria in 2008 . This year she founded with Joachim Friedrich Quack and Annette Zgoll the series Oriental Religions in Antiquity and became a board member of the German Association for the Study of Palestine appointed (to 2012), for which they, together with Jens Kamlah the magazine of the German Palestine Association issued . In 2009 she was appointed associate professor at the Department of Ancient Studies at Stellenbosch University / South Africa. Since 2014 she has been co-director of the excavation in Ashdod-yam (Israel) together with Alexander Fantalkin of Tel Aviv University.

Since 2015 she has been co-director of the Minerva Center, Research on Israel and Aram in Biblical Times, together with Aren Maeir ( Bar Ilan University / Israel), with whom she also publishes the series Research on Israel and Aram in Biblical Times . In 2017 she was appointed Visiting Honorary Full Professor for Biblical Archeology at the Bar Ilan University, in the same year, on February 10, 2017, she was elected a full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences . Since 2018 she has been a member of various scientific boards such as the Journal for Religion and Transformation in Contemporary Society (Open Access Univ. Vienna), the project "Transforming Memories of Collective Violence" (Basel) or the Expert Panel of the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) Cult4 (Theology and Religion Sciences) Bruxelles / Belgium and together with Gideon Bohak (Tel Aviv University) leads the project "Between Materiality and Scribal Magic: West-Semitic Textual Amulets from the First Millennium BCE to the Rise of Islam". Berlejung deals with the history and religious history of Israel and its environment, with ancient oriental iconography , with Semitic epigraphy, Palestine archeology and cultural anthropology .
