Jan Christian Gertz

Jan Christian Gertz (* 1964 in Hanover ) is a German Protestant theologian and Old Testament scholar .

Life

Gertz studied Protestant theology , philosophy and ancient oriental languages from 1983 to 1990 at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , the University of Vienna and the University of Hamburg . Then he passed the first theological exam of the Hanover regional church . He received his doctorate in 1993 from the Georg-August University in Göttingen and completed his habilitation in 1998, also in Göttingen.

In 1999 he took part in a teaching course in Syria , Jordan , Lebanon , Israel and Palestine as a scholarship holder of the German Evangelical Institute for Classical Studies . In the same year he also received a Heisenberg grant from the German Research Foundation .

From 2000 to 2004 Gertz held the chair for Old Testament and Biblical Archeology at the Evangelical Theological Faculty of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz . Since 2004 he has held the chair for the Old Testament at the Evangelical Theological Faculty of the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg .

From 2006 to 2010 Gertz was director of the International Science Forum at Heidelberg University. From 2012 to 2013 he was a Fellow at the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . He declined appointments to the Humboldt University of Berlin (2009) and the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen (2011).
