Christian Frevel (born July 31, 1962 in Siegen ) is a German Roman Catholic theologian and Old Testament scholar .

Life

Frevel studied Catholic theology , oriental studies and philosophy at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn from 1982 to 1989 . In 1994 he was there with the work “Aschera and the exclusivity claim of YHWH. Contributions to literary, religious-historical and iconographic aspects of the ash discussion "(Supervisor: Frank-Lothar Hossfeld ) to the Dr. theol. PhD. In 1998 he also completed his habilitation at the University of Bonn with the habilitation thesis “Remembering Creation with a View of the Land. A thesis on the end of the basic priestly script “in the subject of Exegesis of the Old Testament.

From 2000 to 2004 Frevel was professor for Biblical Theology at the University of Cologne . Since November 2004 Frevel has held the chair for the Old Testament at the Ruhr University in Bochum ; he was vice dean (2007–2011) and dean of the Catholic Theological Faculty (2011–2013). Since 2015 he has also been Associate Professor of the Old Testament at the University of Pretoria .

Frevel is married and has two children.

Act

Frevel's research includes a. methodical, (religious) historical, exegetical and theological issues. His research interests range from the (religious) history of ancient Israel and its environment to the exegesis of the Pentateuch (with a special focus on the numerical book) and lamentations to biblical anthropology. 2007–2011 he carried out a project on the question of mixed marriages in post-exilic Judah. As part of the humanities Käte Hamburger Kolleg “Dynamics of Religious History between Asia and Europe” at the Ruhr University Bochum, he researches both biblical concepts of purity (in cooperation with Christophe Nihan) and the material culture of the Persian era (in cooperation with Sakkie Cornelius). Since 2011, in cooperation with Thomas Pola and Aaron Schart , he has been carrying out a project on the traditional and editorial processes in the book Numeri. His longer-term research perspective is the writing of a numerical commentary in the series “Herder's Theological Commentary on the Old Testament”.

In addition to activities in university self-administration, Frevel has been a board member of the Käte Hamburger Kolleg “Dynamics of Religious History between Asia and Europe” at the Ruhr University in Bochum since 2009. From 2004 to 2012 he was a board member of the German Association for the Exploration of Palestine and since 2007 a member of the selection committee of the DAAD for the academic year “Pro Memoria” in Jerusalem. In addition, Frevel is working on the revision of the standard translation on behalf of the German Bishops' Conference (Book Numbers). From 2009 to 2011 he was co-editor of the series "Contributions to the Science of the Old and New Testaments" at Verlag Kohlhammer. Since 2010 he has been the Old Testament specialist editor of the study books theology at Verlag Kohlhammer and since 2011 of the series “Herder's Biblical Studies” from Herder Verlag.
