The dune cross-brand fire is about 220 meters next to the small lighthouse on the North Sea island of Borkum. It was in operation from 1928 to 1995. The building is popularly known as the cuckoo tower.

Building description

The cross-branding dune is an 8 m high lattice beacon with a triangular lantern rounded at the front. The tower was built in a workshop of the Emden Waterways and Shipping Authority. The lantern stands on an end plate that is attached to a four-legged steel frame. The lantern is rounded on the lake side. Its back consists of two straight steel plates. The tower is painted red with a white horizontal band.

history

The Emden Waterways and Shipping Authority had the structure erected in 1928 on an approximately 11 m high dune as a supplement to other beacons and cross-mark lights on Borkum, to make it easier for ships to enter the Ems, which is difficult after changes in the fairway. The fire was operated electrically from the beginning and was equipped with a belt lamp. After the fairway was shifted, the Emden Waterways and Shipping Authority switched off the cross-branding fire in 1995. After that, there was a threat of demolition, which could only be prevented by using the tower again as a weather station. Only the optics have been removed.
