Quinchao is an island in southern Chile in the Región de los Lagos . With an area of 120 km², it is the second largest island in the Chiloé archipelago . It is separated from the main island of Chiloé by the Dalcahue Channel . A ferry runs there every day, between Dalcahue and La Pasada it only takes five minutes. The island is home to most of the Quinchao Municipality (the rest are smaller islands) and the Curaco de Vélez Municipality . Both communities together have 12,379 inhabitants.
Most of the forest that once covered the island has now been replaced by prairie or is used for growing potatoes .
Some of the wooden churches of Quinchao, namely Quinchao and Achao and the church on the small island Caguach were, in 2000, together with other of the Chiloé archipelago in the World Heritage Site of UNESCO added.
