Notoedres muris causes vesicles, papules, crusts and wart-like skin changes on the ears, nose and possibly on the tail. Sarcoptes anacanthos causes severe itching, which leads to the skin being scratched.

The diagnosis is carried out by detecting mites in a skin scrap ; for Radforia ensifera, an adhesive strip impression is usually sufficient. In the differential diagnosis, infestation with other ectoparasites such as Liponyssus bacoti , lice or hair follicle mites must be excluded.

Ivermectin or selamectin is used for treatment , Radforia ensifera can also be combated with fipronil . A single treatment is usually sufficient.

Notoedres muris can also spread to humans and trigger a pseudo scabies with severe itching. In humans, however, the disease usually heals spontaneously, as the mite in the human skin cannot complete its development cycle.
