Réginald Garrigou-Lagrange OP (born February 21, 1877 in Auch ( Département Gers , France) as Gontran Garrigou-Lagrange ; † February 15, 1964 in Rome ) was a French Dominican .

Life

In 1902 Garrigou-Lagrange, who received the religious name Reginaldus when he entered the order , was ordained a priest . From 1909 to 1960 he was professor of fundamental theology and dogmatics at the Athenaeum Angelicum (later the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas ). In 1917 he founded the world's first chair for spiritual theology.

He is considered the most important Dominican theologian and Thomist from the first half of the 20th century. His studies of Thomism, fundamental theology and mysticism, translated into many languages (around 800), had a pioneering effect. On Pope Pius XII. he also had great influence in church politics. The future Pope John Paul II completed his dissertation with Professor Garrigou-Lagrange at the “Angelicum”.

In his works he describes the so-called “poured-in contemplation” as the core of the mystical connection with God: “It is a simple and loving knowledge of God, which cannot be reached through our personal, grace- supported activity, but it demands a special, obvious inspiration and enlightenment of the Holy Spirit. "

There are efforts in the USA to have Garrigou-Lagrange beatified.
