The Réserve écologique de l'Île-Brion is a protected area established in 1988 on an area of 650 hectares in the south-east of the Canadian province of Québec .
It is located on one of the Îles de la Madeleine , a group of islands in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence , with the two protected islets totaling 750 hectares. According to the location, the climate is strongly influenced by the Atlantic , there are also large dunes and the rocky coast offers a home for numerous sea birds.
The Île-Brion is relatively flat, the highest point is 60 m above sea level. The subsoil consists of red and gray-green sandstone. In the southwest there are dunes that were formed after the last ice age, in which the eroded sandstone of the surrounding coasts collects. Today they are largely fixed by the growth of Ammophila breviligulata from the sweet grass family .
The number of plant species is estimated at 200 to 250, of which 10 to 15% were introduced by humans. The species make up about a third of the total number of species on the archipelago. The rare Hudsonia tomentosa , which is also found in the Berry Dunes in western Québec, is considered endangered . The same applies to the plant from the common juniper family, known in Québec as génévrier à gros fruits .
166 bird species have been recorded on the island, more than half of which breed there. Some of them are in danger of disappearing from Canada for good. These highly endangered species are the yellow-footed plover , the eared grebe and the knutt or knotty sandpiper of the subspecies Calidris canutus rufa .
Only four species of mammals live in the reserve. These are the deer mouse , here called Souris sylvestre , the red fox , the coyote and the bat species Myotis lucifugus from the mouse- eared family .
