The Réserve écologique de la Mine-aux-Pipistrelles is an ecological reserve in the extreme south of the Canadian province of Québec .

It was established in 2002 on an area of 3.24 hectares. It is located in the regional county town of Memphrémagog 30 km southwest of Magog .

The small area protects a talc mine , so one Steatitbergbau , which was shut down in 1994th The former Van Reet mine , already operated by Baker Talc Limited in the 1930s , is the only underground protected area of its kind. The only decisive factor is that thousands of bats hibernate there (pipistrelles). These are the five species Myotis lucifugus , Myotis septentrionalis and eastern small-footed myotis - they belong to the species of mouse ears - then Eptesicus fuscus from the kind of eptesicus and Pipistrellus subflavus from the kind of dwarf bats . For Pipistrellus subflavus , this is the northernmost wintering site and the only one in Québec. It is also the only species of this genus in America. In addition, it is the only representative of the subgenus Perimyotis . It often shares wintering sites with Myotis lucifugus and Myotis septentrionalis , as is the case in the Van Reet mine. In the English-speaking America as Eastern Small-footed Myotis known eastern small-footed myotis is the smallest representative of the bats are in America. In Quebec, they are called therefore Chauve-souris pygmée .

Myotis leibii , one of the five species of bats that winter in the former Van Reet mine. With a length of 65–95 mm and a head diameter of 45 mm, it is one of the smallest bats.
