The Réserve écologique du Pin-Rigide is a protected area established in 1977 on an area of 63.1 hectares in the extreme south of the Canadian province of Québec in the regional county municipality of Le Haut-Saint-Laurent .

It is located 50 km southwest of Montréal in the municipality of Saint-Antoine-Abbé . Its task is to protect an ancient forest that consists predominantly of pitch pines ( Pinus rigida , hence the name of the reserve), a tree species that has been endangered in Québec since 2005.

Pseudacris maculata

The area is poor in nutrients and the soil is acidic, the rocks on three quarters of the area of the protected area are only covered by a very thin layer of humus . The pitch pine is able to adapt perfectly to the soil conditions. Where the humus layer is only 10 cm or less thick, it grows lower and the distances between the trees increase. The comparatively small tree species only reaches a certain size on good soil. Some of the trees in the reserve are around 45 years old, reach heights of 10 to 12 m and a trunk diameter of 25 cm.

In addition to the tree species that gives it its name, 68 vascular plants and a further 24 other plant species have been identified. Of these, the Bartonia virginica ( French bartonie de Virginie ), one of the three species of the genus Bartonia , is considered endangered.

The status of three animal species is precarious or the species are threatened or endangered. These are Pseudacris maculata ( French rainette faux-grillon ), a species of amphibian , as well as the four -toed salamander and the sedge wren . Otherwise the fauna is rather poor in species.
