Systematics
The genus Bartonia was set up in 1801 by the American botanist Gotthilf Henry Ernest Muhlenberg in Carl Ludwig Willdenow : The Society of Friends of Natural Sciences in Berlin, new writings , 3, pp. 444–445. The botanical genus name Bartonia honors the American botanist Benjamin Smith Barton (1766–1815).
In the genus Bartonia Muhl. ex Willd. nom. cons. are three types of which one has three subspecies:
-
Bartonia paniculata (Michx.) Muhl. , Syn .: Centaurella paniculata Michx. : There are three subspecies:
- Bartonia paniculata (Michx.) Muhl. subsp. paniculata
- Bartonia paniculata subsp. iodandra (BLRobins.) J. Gillett
- Bartonia paniculata subsp. texana (Correll) KG Mathews, Dunne, E. York & Struwe , Syn .: Bartonia texana Correll
- Bartonia verna (Michx.) Raf. ex Barton
- Bartonia virginica (L.) Britton, Sterns & Poggenb.
The generic name Bartonia was derived from the description of Bartonia Pursh ex Sims in Bot. Mag. , 36, 1812, t. Awarded again in 1487 by the German-Canadian botanist Frederick Traugott Pursh for a genus from the nettle family (Loasaceae). Since this description was published later, it represents a younger homonym according to the ICBN (Vienna Code, Article 53) , which may not be used ( noun illegitimum ). The plant species falling under this description are placed in the genus Mentzelia .
