The Réservoir Pipmuacan is a reservoir in the Canadian province of Québec . It is located on the Rivière Betsiamites river in the commune of Lac-au-Brochet ( Côte-Nord region ).

The associated storage power plant Bersimis-1 ( 49 ° 17 ′ 45 ″  N , 69 ° 33 ′ 3 ″  W ) was built between 1953 and 1956 with an original output of 912  MW . The power plant is operated by Hydro-Québec . The damming of the Rivière Betsiamites by the 74 m high Barrage Bersimis-1 dam at ( 49 ° 21 ′ 30.6 ″  N , 69 ° 46 ′ 15.9 ″  W ) gave rise to the Reservoir Pipmuacan , which was 802 km² when normal damming occurs . In the 1990s, the catchment area was enlarged by river diversions. The installed capacity was also increased - to 1178 MW (8 turbines). The drop height is 266.7 m.

The reservoir has a highly irregular shape, with several deep bays, numerous islands in the western part and a large rounded peninsula in the center. Main tributaries are the Betsiamites, Sylvestre, Hirondelles and Pipmuacan rivers. The reservoir is named after the flooded Lac Pipmuacan. The name comes from the Innu language and means "arrow". According to the missionaries on the Côte-Nord, it commemorates the last battle of the Innu against the Iroquois on Mont Pigmaugan, a mountain nearby. Other spellings of the lake before standardization were Pipmuakan, Pipmaugan and Pipmakan.
