Río Lagartos is a city in the Mexican state of Yucatán and capital of the municipality of the same name, Río Lagartos . The name of the settlement in Mayan language was Holkolben .
Tourism is becoming more and more important due to the nearby Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve and boat tours on the Ria.
history
The region is first mentioned by the Spaniards in the map series Estudio cartográfico De Or Kaalsbis Novo from 1511. Before the Conquest , the region was inhabited by Mayans from the Principality of Chikinchel.
