The Roman tomb near Kirchentellinsfurt was erected in Roman times in memory of a wealthy Roman near where it is today at the junction from Bundesstraße 27 to Einsiedel Castle.

history

The tomb on the Neckar, like that of numerous wealthy Romans, stood at the beginning of the 3rd century AD on the Roman road Neckar-Alb-Aare , an important connecting road from Rottenburg am Neckar through the Neckar valley to Köngen . At over ten meters, it was larger than today's modern wooden tower, about half as high. No inscriptions have survived from the monument, which was once around four meters square.

Archaeological finds

From 1859, parts of a pillar tomb, which is extremely rare in the northern provinces and especially to the right of the Rhine, were found, as well as other masonry parts, sculptures, heads of male statues and relief fragments in 1937.

Shortly before the construction of the new Neckartalstraße, the Latin teacher Eberhard Krauss exposed the shingle roof of the tomb, which was ingrown with high undergrowth, on a day of hiking with a class from the Tübingen Uhland grammar school so that it would not be damaged during the construction work. Historically committed citizens from Kirchentellinsfurt shortly afterwards set up the modern museum platform for information about this tomb. The people of Kirchentellinsfurt made, among other things, casts of three stone human heads. The work of art in Kirchentellinsfurt probably belonged to the “ pillar tombs ” type, of which only four examples are known in Germany.

Casts of a lion, a sphinx and an attic head with a Phrygian cap , as well as original parts of the stone-carved shingle roof, are set up today on the B 27 , approx. 800 m west of the actual site, and are explained by panels.
