The Roman theater in the Burgundian city ​​of Autun (lat. Augustodunum ) was added to the list of architectural, soil and garden monuments in France Base Mérimée in 1840 . It is located in the immediate vicinity of the city's Lycée Militaire and, with a diameter of 149 meters, was one of the largest Roman stage theaters in the west of the Roman Empire . The theater offered space for around 15,000 visitors.


history

Emperor Augustus founded Augustodunum around 10 BC. On the long-distance trade route Via Agrippa and the river Arroux . The Augustodunum located on the plain corresponded to the Roman city model and was therefore equipped with a stage and amphitheater. Coin finds indicate that the theater was built around 70 AD.

Following the example of the Gallic theaters, parts were made of wood. The Autun theater consisted of Skene , which has largely disappeared today, and Orchestra as well as a cavea , the rising auditorium with semicircular steps, crowned by a gallery, of which only the substructures have survived . After the fall of the Western Roman Empire , the theater was abandoned and used as a quarry from the Middle Ages until the early twentieth century.
