Albert Grenier

Albert Grenier (born April 22, 1878 in Paris , † June 23, 1961 ibid) was a French historian, religious scholar and Roman provincial archaeologist . He specialized in the history of ancient Rome and the Celts , especially the Gauls .

Grenier studied at the École pratique des hautes études until 1904 and was a member of the École française de Rome from 1904 to 1907 . In 1912 he received his doctorate. From 1918 to 1936 he was Professor of Provincial Roman Archeology at the University of Strasbourg . In 1936 he became a professor at the Collège de France , from 1947 to 1952 he was director of the École française de Rome.

After the death of Joseph Déchelette , he continued his manual of the prehistoric archeology of the Celts and Gallo-Romans ( Manuel d'Archeologie Prehistorique, Celtique et Gallo-Romaine ). For the religious history series Mana he wrote the article on the religions of the Etruscans and Romans.

In 1942 he was elected a member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres . In 1943 he founded Gallia magazine and he was there from 1947 to 1952.
