Ralph Meiling (* 19th February 1963 in Cologne ) is a German photographer , video artist and director . He has lived and worked in Berlin since 1985 .

Life

Meiling studied art, photography and design at the Art Academy for Media in Cologne . In the years 1995–1997 he worked as a model, photographer and filmmaker for renowned fashion designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier , Matsuda, Comme des Garçons and Yohji Yamamoto . During this time he developed his large format video photo style. The photographs were created using an idiosyncratic recording technique. The models had to sit on a chair for hours with a motionless expression on their faces and were illuminated by Meiling with a flashlight as the only light source. Recorded with a video camera , certain parts of the film were later photographed on a monitor and printed on large-format photo prints.

In 2001 Ralph Meiling founded the film and photo production "suitcaseproduction" in Berlin. The choreographer Stefanie Schröder and the musician and singer Berit Emma Ott (Sender Freie Rakete) work as permanent employees . The focus of the work is strongly visual and experimental photo and film productions.

Ralph Meiling has worked as a freelance cameraman for international film and television broadcasters such as Arte , ZDF , ARD , Deutsche Welle , BBC , MTV , VIVA and all German private broadcasters since 1995 . In 2005 Ralph Meiling shot the TV 9 part, "Bergers Business" for DWTv, a long-term documentary about the entrepreneur and political advisor Roland Berger from Munich .
