Danielle de Picciotto (born February 19, 1965 in Tacoma , Washington ) is an American multimedia artist . She lives and works as a painter, draftsman, musician, author and filmmaker in Berlin . Her works are exhibited internationally.

Life

Danielle de Picciotto studied music and art in New York City . In 1987 she settled in Berlin, Germany. Together with her then partner Matthias “ Dr. Motte “Roeingh initiated the first Love Parade on July 1st, 1989 in Berlin.

As a singer, she was a member of the Berlin band Space Cowboys from 1990 to 1995 . In 1997, together with Gudrun Gut, she founded the Ocean Club , an open space where art and music are presented. Later the project turned into a radio broadcast. From 1995 to 2000 she played a key role in the Berlin club art culture movement as an artist / curator and in 1998 founded the institute , a gallery in which she represented over 150 artists, musicians and writers. In 1999 she founded the regular series of exhibitions and events, Kunst oder König, and presented Berlin artists, musicians and DJs in international group exhibitions, concerts and cultural projects - often in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut ( Rome , Milan , Naples , Hong Kong, Osaka , Tokyo , Sarajevo ). As an artist and curator , she was regularly called upon to present Berlin in all its diversity and creativity. In 2005 she initiated Art or Queen , a series of exhibitions in which only female artists are presented. In 2005 she produced the audiovisual play Mountains of Madness together with Alexander Hacke and the Tiger Lillies .

In 2006 she married her long-time partner Alexander Hacke, the bassist of the band Einstürzende Neubauten . In 2007 de Picciotto and Hacke worked on Sebastian Brant's work Das Narrenschiff , which was also released on DVD and CD the following year. Both toured the world with the work. In 2008 Danielle de Picciotto was commissioned by the German Foreign Office to make a film clip about European dances. The clip star dance illustrates how folk dances can be developed in a way that is suitable for clubs and youths. In 2009 she was again commissioned by the Foreign Office to make a short film about 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall. In May 2009, Hacke and de Picciotto were introduced as a dazzling Berlin artist couple in the documentary In Berlin , directed by Ciro Cappellari and Michael Ballhaus . In 2011 she became a four-month stay in the Meet Factory by David Černý invited in Prague to build an audio-visual installation. De Picciotto's Berlin memoir The Beauty Of Transgression ( Die Gestalten Verlag ) came out. In 2012 de Picciotto became a member of the band Crime & the City Solution . In 2013, the interdisciplinary artist published her second book We are Gypsies Now - The Path into Unknown as a graphic diary by Metrolit Verlag. In 2014 Danielle was invited to compose music for the play Republic of the Wolves (Theater Dortmund) together with Mick Harvey, Alexander Hacke and Paul Wallfisch and to perform it live during the run. A new band Ministry of Wolves emerged from this collaboration between the four musicians. In 2015 her book We Are Gypsies Now was published in the US by AMOK books, and her first solo LP Tacoma was released by Moabit Records . In 2019 Danielle de Picciotto released her second solo LP Deliverance on the English label Louder Than War .

In 2006 Danielle de Picciotto and Alexander Hacke were invited to a sound residency in Krems, Austria and led a seminar on interdisciplinary performances at the HFG (ZKM) in Karlsruhe. Danielle also did a short seminar at NYU, Berlin and in 2017 at the Folkwang University in Bochum .
