The Römpp Lexikon Naturstoffe contains information about organic natural substances and the phenomena associated with them. The content offers a representative selection of over 150,000 known natural substances.

The lexicon mainly describes secondary natural substances . Among secondary natural substances are compounds which occur only in certain organisms.

A distinction is made between the primary materials and the secondary materials . Under primary materials to products understands the primary metabolism , which are necessary for the maintenance of metabolism. Under secondary materials understands deterrents, many poisons, flower pigments and pheromones .
