Rüdiger Manesse the Elder (* before 1252; † September 5, 1304 in Zurich ) was a collector of Minne songs .

Manesse , who came from an aristocratic family from Zurich , had been a citizen since 1264, a knight since 1268, and chaired the autumn council from 1278 to 1302. He was one of the most influential council members in Zurich, participated in numerous arbitration tribunals, assumed guarantees and was a witness in legal transactions that were carried out in the city of Zurich.

In addition, Manesse is considered to be an important promoter of minnesong in the Zurich district and made a name for himself as a collector of minnesongs. Together with his son Johannes, he combined all the song texts into a comprehensive collection of song books.

This is related to the layout of the Heidelberg song manuscript , also known as Manessesche Liederhandschrift , the most extensive collection of German-language song art from the High Middle Ages to the beginning of the 14th century, the basis of which was created shortly after 1300 in Zurich. What part Manesse took in this is unclear.
